#21 Who Is Your Favourite Goofball Character?
I’ll keep today’s blog post short and sweet – partly because I’m writing this on the back of a nine hour shift at work (which began at 6am this morning), so I’m not sure how coherent I will be, and partly because it’s actually extremely difficult to explain why you find something funny. Humour is so objective and during the painful process of dissecting a joke, it really stops being funny! But, hey, I’ll give this my best shot. Nichijou’s Yuuko is, by far, my favourite goofball character. Here’s why:
I get a real kick out of the fact that Yuuko is the total opposite of the demure, highschool girl archetype that is so prevalent in anime! She’s loud, loves to be the centre of attention, relentlessly teases her friends, and is constantly the victim of Nichijou’s slapstick comedy.
On that note, to be Yuuko is to suffer! Yuuko’s almost always, through her own recklessness, clumsiness, and stupidity, hurting herself, often in the most bizarre and unlikely ways. Like the times when she was struck on the head by a dilapidated shrine’s bell, a stray baseball, or the toy that she was playing with (huh, her stupidity suddenly makes sense in light of all of these head injuries)! It’s not unusual for Yuuko to be hurt by other people, either, including her friends and family (who’ve just had enough of her antics), particularly persistent mosquitos, and even seemingly friendly puppers. In short, she is the very embodiment of slapstick comedy! Yuuko also has the worst luck. If something can go wrong for her, it does, in a big way. It’s like the universe is personally out to get her and ruin her day!
Yuuko also pulls some of the funniest facial expressions. See the above collage.
Yuuko is most funny when she is intentionally trying to be funny, because when she’s intentionally trying to be funny, she’s not at all funny, which is really funny! Does that make sense? Ha, ha! The times when she yells at her friends in Malaysian and fails to get any kind of rise out of them springs to mind. I’m somebody who appreciates the power of the pun and loves a good “dad joke”, so this kind of humour really gets me!
Finally, Yuuko’s seiyuu, Mariko Honda, is amazing. She is one of the few seiyuu whose voice I can conjure up in my mind’s ear, as her nervous, high-pitched laughter whenever Yuuko felt nervous or embarrassed, her ear-splitting cries of pain whenever Yuuko obtained even the most minor and unimpressive of injuries, and the energy and exuberance with which she delivered most of Yuuko’s lines really tickled (and impressed) me!
Thanks for reading today’s blog post! To compensate for its brevity, below are some of my favourite Yuuko moments. Enjoy! Before you go, let me know: which character makes you laugh like a loon? I look forward to hearing from you!
