#24 What Scene Shocked Me the Most?
Mitty’s Transformation – Made in Abyss
Anime is chock-full of shocking scenes. That’s one of the things I love most about it – it’s ability to sucker you in, catch you off guard, and subvert all of your expectations! Griffith’s betrayal in Berserk, that death in Death Note, the moment when we first saw a different side to the girls of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica’s legendary twist, School Days’ gruesome finale… These are but a few of the scenes that come to mind when considering this topic. However, the award for the scene that shocked me the most would have to go to Mitty’s transformation in Made in Abyss. Major spoilers for the show ahead.
Made in Abyss is a pretty shocking anime. Mitty’s transformation isn’t it’s first shocking moment by any means (that would have to be the moment when a corpse weeper treated Riko’s lifeless body like an all-you-can-eat-buffet during one of Regu’s nightmares), but it is definitely its most! Here’s why:
Up until this point in the show, bar Regu and Riko’s clash with Ouzen (which, when compared to the brutality that takes place in this scene, suddenly seems like harmless play-fighting), all of the misfortune that befell our young heroes was the result of run-ins with the nightmarish creatures of the Abyss. Mitty’s transformation, on the other hand, was an act of evil inflicted on her by another human being, Bondrewd. This is, in part, what makes this scene so shocking. It’s easy to explain away attacks on the children by hungry, territorial beasts, but how can you even begin to explain away an attack perpetrated by a human being, who ought to possess morals and a conscience, on another human being?
This whole scene is made 10 times more shocking by the fact that Bondrewd is inflicting this kind of pain and torture on children. Evolutionarily speaking, we are equipped with an innate desire to protect infants and children from harm. There’s a strong, scientific basis for this claim, with neuroimaging studies finding that certain parts of our brain, the parts linked to emotion, respond strongly to children and infants’ faces, but not to adults’. Some argue that this helps to ensure the continued survival of our species. In light of this information, Bondrewd’s experimentation on Mitty and the other children seems all the more inhuman.
Also shocking is the following: when we first meet Mitty she’s already all pink and squishy. As such, we already know that something terrible is about to happen to her going into this scene, it has to. However, in spite of this, the impact of this scene is in no way, shape, or form lessened. It’s just too horrible! To watch Mitty try to act brave in the face of what’s about to happen to her, only to hear her beg for death mere moments later… Just how disgusting it is to see a cute, young child fall apart on a cellular level… Watching all this happen before her best friend, Nanachi’s eyes, as they are forced to helplessly look on… Nothing can prepare you for that! It makes you feel physically sick to watch.
And that’s why Mitty’s transformation is the anime scene that shocked me the most! I can’t wait for Made in Abyss’ second season. That nasty bastard Bondrewd better get what’s coming to him! So, what did you think of this scene? Do you agree that it’s the most shocking that anime has to offer? Or can you trump my choice? Leave me a comment letting me know!
