  1. It’s great that you have a process to score fairly. The problem is when sites like MAL aggregate the ratings and everyone is using their own system. I’ve come across book reviewers that use 2 stars as average. It’s one of the reasons I don’t score at all anymore.

    • How would you go about fixing a broken system like that? I wouldn’t have the first clue! Ah, well… MAL may not be perfect, but it still has its uses!

      • Easiest way would be to have a two system like Netflix has switched to. Thumbs up or thumbs down. There’s less interpretation, but until more implement something similar, it is what it is.

      • I feel like a thumbs up/thumbs down approach leaves TOO much room for interpretation! I mean, what does it tell you really? That I may have liked or disliked a show, sure, but nothing about the strength of my feelings towards it! : )

  2. Glad to see someone else is as serious about scoring as I am! I use a /100 system which means no anime season or movie has ever gotten the perfect 100/100!

      • Similar to you in some respects. Ultimately it’s just enjoyment factor, it doesn’t have to be some ‘high-art’ to get a high score as evidenced by the fact that my highest score is for ‘To Love-Ru Darkness 2nd Season’ which I gave a 99.

      • You’re clearly a down-to-earth guy. You gotta respect that. Most of the shows that I’ve given a 10 are kinda artsy-fartsy, but then there’s Naruto! Ha, ha!

      • At least you take scoring seriously! It kinda grinds my gears when somebody gives a show a low score for petty reasons! I know that it’s not really my business, but still…

  3. When it comes to scoring, I try to have some level of objectivity by considering how I think the show went wrong to deduct from 100 (I use the /100), unless my mission was to hatewatch from the beginning, in which case I work in the opposite direction (I have 1 100/100, SGRS s2, which I loved wholeheartedly even after people bashed its ending.) However, I am aware I have my biases, especially towards specific genres, and so I use 50/100 to (sometimes) acknowledge this show isn’t for me, but I can see why others might like it. The things I don’t score are due to the fact I haven’t watched them in a while and won’t go back to them due to time constraints and/or not having a way to reevaluate them.

    • Rating becomes difficult when a show is, objectively speaking (as much as that is possible), good, but it just isn’t your cup of tea… Mecha and sci-fi shows usually fall into that category for me. It sounds like you have a pretty good system in place for instances like that!

I’m so glad that you took the time to read and comment on my post! I hope that my late reply won’t deter you from visiting my blog again sometime!

  4. ive always come at anime with the mentality that im woefully underqualified to judge it, so i dont try to take scoring too seriously. above all, i try to be fair. like you, i specifically look for the positives, because they’re always something to be found. but i also think that i should also specifically look for the negatives, in the name of fairness. either way, im mostly at the point where scoring is just my internal method of keeping track of how i feel about shows relative to each other.

    • Out of interest, what do you think makes you qualified to judge anime? I know that you’ve been blogging for quite some time now (and that you’ve been an anime fan for even longer than that, I should think). You don’t think that these are worthy credentials?

      • well, i would say that time only matters if you use it correctly. and more to the point, i dont even attempt to speak for more than myself. i think i can safely judge how i feel about an anime, but i dont try to speak from the perspective of anyone else

  6. I agree with you, that on writing and scoring reviews there will be personal feelings involved and it’s a reflection of your personality. I don’t know about anyone else but for me I will think twice about my views before using it in my article. I think it’s about maintaing the right balance and if you have done that in your reviewing then you are good.

    Keep up the good work.

On that note, I would like to know your views on my article.
