‘Skeptical’ is the word which best sums up my feelings when I sat down in front of my laptop and prepared myself to watch the Nazo no Kanojo X OVA. I’ve had a less than savoury experience with OVAs in the past, finding they do little to add to the show, existing mainly to provide fans with the excessive fanservice forbidden by the show either due to the time it airs on TV or by the fact they had to stay suitable for their target audience- and considering Nazo no Kanojo’s pushed boundaries within its TV show (which are always, comparatively, more reserved)… well, can you understand my cause for concern? I was also worried it wouldn’t make up for the slightly boring finale of the show, but stupid me, I should’ve learnt from experience that it’s pointless making any kind of pre-conceived assumptions when about to watch Nazo no Kanojo- ‘cause it will always end up doing something completely out of the left field! Still, there was fanservice… But that’s almost a given in OVAs today, isn’t it?
Nazo no Kanojo X
So, as expected, a bit of a cop-out finale! It was OK, in a kind of fluffy, sickeningly sweet way, and I’m sure that’ll blow up somebody’s skirt, but I dunno, it just felt like the director decided to play it safe, a little disappointing given that the show’s been pushing boundaries almost since its start and that this is, you know, the finale, which should, ideally, be mega exciting and have you in tears over the fact there may never be any more episodes ever again by its conclusion!!
I was going to start off this post by complaining how this was yet another development episode for Urabe and Tsubaki’s relationship, which shows just how much that mega Korra post has drained me- every single episode of every show focusing on the relationship between two characters ought to be a development episode, lest the show begin to stagnate. That’s why this post is so uncharacteristically late (well, that and because I’ve been on a sort-of-but-not-really-’cause-it-wasn’t-abroad-or-even-somewhere-I-was-unfamiliar-with-holiday with the boyf)- I poured my entire heart and soul into writing about that Korra finale, so now all I’m capable of at the moment is uninspired drivel… sorry…
So now that I’ve got you all excited about this post… heh, heh…
This episode started off good, maintaining the will-he-do-anything-will-he-not-do-anything tension of last episode, up to a point, and that point was Urabe, awkward cardboard robot version’s entrance. From that point, ‘til about the final few minutes of the episode, it all got a little bit boring… I mean, I understand what they were trying to do, resolve the issue of Hayakawa interfering in their relationship by showing her the bond between Urabe and Tsubaki, but this is something that’s happened a couple of times now, to different degrees. Sure, so now there were two naked girls, instead of just the one, but so what? Naked girls do not make a masterpiece, at least not in anime. Greek sculpture maybe, but not anime!
I’m baaack baby!
Oh God, what have I come back to!? Their relationship’s just getting progressively worse, isn’t it? Well, I suppose that’s to be expected- we’re reaching the climax of the series now, need to have some kind of a huge problem rear its ugly head and have it resolved in preparation for a nice, fluffy finale… tra la la la~
