I may be only seven episodes into My Love Story!! but those seven episodes were more than enough to propel Takeo Gouda straight to the very tippy top of the list of my favourite romcom heroes, before Toradora’s Ryuuji, Clannad’s Tomoya, or even Ouran High School Host Club’s Tamaki (whose reign as my favourite romcom hero has gone unchallenged for a whole 10 years)!

My hubby and I are both huge lovers of anime! Even though he doesn’t have much free time to sit down and watch it by himself anymore (a 60 hour-long work week will do that to you), we still make it a point to watch it together, both taking turns to choose a show. I’ll usually pick a show that I’ve already seen for us to watch together, because I just love sharing with other people the things I love – that’s why I blog! Made in Abyss, the surprise hit of 2017, was my latest choice. That’s why I decided to write about my favourite Made in Abyss character for this month’s Character Spotlight: Ouzen the “Immovable Sovereign”. This might seem like an odd choice for favourite character. She’s certainly much less lovable than Regu, Riko, or Nanachi, the show’s main characters. But during this post I hope to convince you as to why Ouzen is no less incredible.
Confession time: when I watch an anime that’s wildly popular there’s this part of me that wants to dislike it! This is so stupid, but I like to think of myself as a gourmand when it comes to anime, that my taste is far more refined and superior to everybody else’s and that popular shows are popular simply because the uncultured masses don’t know any better. Of course, this couldn’t be further from the truth! I’m no more cultured than anybody else just because I’ve seen Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and some anime are popular simply because they are great and are, therefore, deserving of their popularity. Haikyu!! is one such anime! It’s exciting to watch, has outstandingly high production values, and has a huge cast of engaging, lovable characters. Oikawa, one of these characters, is, in my opinion, the best of the bunch and is the subject of this month’s Character Spotlight! Minor spoilers for season 2 ahead.
In celebration of yet another fantastic episode of My Hero Academia (MHA) this week, in which Bakugou and Midoriya were finally able to diffuse the tension between them through an epic clash of fists, I would like to dedicate September’s Character Spotlight to my favourite fledgling hero (as well as one of my all-time favourite anime characters), Izuku Midoriya.
Sasuke might seem like a bizarre choice for this month’s Character Spotlight. After all, I’ve been very vocal in my dislike of him, even going so far as to call him a piece of human excrement during a recent blog post. So why have I decided to write about Sasuke, of all people, this month? Well, after almost 10 years of watching Naruto Shippuden, I’m finally just eight episodes away from finishing it – cue the party poppers! This means that I recently watched Naruto and Sasuke’s final fight in the Final Valley. This fight gave me a lot of insight into Sasuke’s character, so much so that, for the first time ever, I felt that, whilst he might not be a very nice person, he is, for sure, an excellent character! I hope that you’ll stay with me as I unpack this statement.
