So it’s been an entire year since I started up Watashi wa bucho!! And boy, has it been a busy year!
Lists
We’ve all been there- we’ve seen so many different shows over the years, so many of what would be dubbed ‘classics’ by the anime fandom, that we think: ‘There can’t possibly be any more gems out there for me to watch!’ I’ve been watching anime for almost four years now, and this is something I remember thinking barely into my second year!! Granted, it may have been a bit early for me to have thought such a thing back then (blimey, I hadn’t even seen Berserk or Ghost in the Shell at that point), but these days thing are certainly a little… thin on the ground in terms of shows…
This year’s been very difficult in terms of deciding what to watch. I’ve mainly stuck to watching fairly new releases, and shows I wouldn’t even have dreamed of bringing myself to watch but a year or two ago. Understandably, given I felt forced into watching some of these shows, my thoughts on them, pre-viewing experience, were, for the most part, negative. However, on more than one occasion, with more than one show, I’ve been blown away this year. Below are three examples of shows that have done this.
Hey guys, it’s been a while! So the reason for my absence is… I started uni! Woo! But rather than my absence being due to being in the state of perpetual inebriation that is associated with uni life (though I am ever so slightly tipsy as I write this- who’s going to turn down free Jaegerbombs, even though they’re kind of icky, right?) it is more due to the fact that I forgot my laptop charger at home! I know, pretty dumb of me, huh? But in my defence, it doesn’t matter how prepared you think you are, you’re always going to forgot something vital during a big move! And then, of course, there’s the fact I haven’t had a proper night’s sleep for 4 nights now- some bloody wanker keeps pulling my dorm’s fire alarm in the middle of the night (I’ve had 1 in the morning, twice, 3 in the morning and 7 now) thinking it’s proper funny, so yeah… The ol’ noggin’ tends not to function particularly well without its precious zzzs!
Anyway… I hope to be back in action relatively soon once I’ve settled in, had a decent night’s sleep and the new season of anime has started, bringing with it a whole new plethora of things to discuss…
But to help fill up the space of time between now and then, have a list of five anime that encapsulate uni life, though I should mention, some of them are not actually set inside a university… *shrug*
As promised, a (fairly) concise list of my favourite anime/manga characters, written (mostly) for my entertainment and reference. This is a list that’s constantly changing- I mean, two of these characters I had the pleasure meeting only this year– so I will update it as necessary.
Anyway, these are all characters that have had a profound impact, not just on their respective shows and fellow characters, but on me. Some have made me laugh, some have made me cry, some I have fallen in love with, one I find particularly terrifying, all are completely awesome and fascinating and if you’ve met them, I’m sure you’ll agree!
Disclaimer:
Yes, I have coined terms straight from one of my favourite websites, tvtropes.org; I hope that’s not an issue? Any usage of their terminology is merely to help illustrate my points!
Archetypes, for those who may not know, are universally acknowledged sets of characteristics, representing particular types of personality; they occur across mediums and are especially rampant in anime. Some examples of well-known archetypes include: damsel in distress, prince charming and villain-turned-good-guy.
We all have our favourite character archetypes, those that lighten up our screens and put smiles on our faces. I just thought I’d share with you some of my own personal favourites in preparation for my upcoming list of favourite characters. In much the same way my What makes a 10/10 anime? post helped justify the presence of some of the shows on my Top 30, this should help justify why I cherish those characters so dearly. Let me know what you think and what some of your favourite character archetypes are but, I should warn you, the first to say ‘tsundere’ is getting salmoned…
