Is It Dumb to Get Emotional Over Anime?

Last year I picked up a new pastime: Dungeons and Dragons. While, even now, some of the game’s finer mechanics elude me, I’m super invested in the story that my DM has masterfully woven together. As I’m writing this, my character, Sorrel, and his girlfriend, Tilly, find themselves in dire straights. This, partnered with the fact that our next session isn’t for another two weeks, means that I’m an emotional wreck. Regrettably, my husband doesn’t understand what I’m going through. “They’re just fictional characters! None of it is real!” All this in spite of the fact that it’s not the first time I’ve gotten upset over fictional characters… 

In fact, I cry over anime all the time. Just the other day I snotted all over my husband’s shirt while watching I Want to Eat Your Pancreas (that movie destroyed me). So you’d think he’d be used to this particular quirk of mine by now. But, is there any merit in what my husband is saying? Or what it implies: that it’s dumb to get emotional over anime? 

12 Days of Anime 2019 – Chihaya Is Back!

It doesn’t happen nearly as much as I’d like (probably because of my fondness for kooky, off-the-wall anime), but every so often it seems the anime gods hear my prayers and bless me with more of one of my favourite shows. Hearing that Chihayafuru was getting its third season after six long, agonising years was one of those rare times. If you didn’t already know, Chihayafuru is an awesome series. This anime takes a sport that very few have heard of (and even fewer have played), karuta, and, through its characters’ passion for it, gets you invested in it too. Who knew that a card game with no magic, monsters, or ancient Egyptian gods could be so exciting? Not to mention that its characters are all perfect little cinnamon rolls! Thankfully, Chihayafuru’s third season is proving to be more than worth the wait and is helping to ensure that 2019 ends with a bang! 

Here are some of the things that I’ve liked the most about Chihayafuru 3 so far… 

Fruits Basket (2019) Episode 24 – the Cat’s Outta the Bag…

It’s finally here! The (for all intents and purposes) finale of Fruits Basket’s first season! During this amazing episode, one of Kyo’s deepest and darkest secrets (you’d better believe that there’s more), his true cat form, was forcibly dragged out into the open for all to see. And, despite its disgusting smell and appearance, and Kyo’s attempts at pushing her away, Tohru is able to accept him and convince him to come home. It’s a beautiful, moving episode and, like many others before it, incredibly thought-provoking… 

Fruits Basket Episode 17 – the Importance of Mentors

Fruits Basket has done it again! This week’s episode managed to alternate between sad and happy, tragic and encouraging scenes without giving me whiplash. That these scenes, so different in tone, flowed from one to another so seamlessly was extremely impressive! I have so much respect for Takaya-sensei and those responsible for bringing her manga to life. During this episode, we found out how Uo managed to patch things up with the Hondas, by renouncing her life of petty crime and going straight. My brief summary might have made that sound easy, but, in actuality, it was anything but…
