An episode about the blossoming affections between our three main characters!? Yes! Finally a legitimate excuse to rant about various Korra shippings!
Yes, well, I’ve made my views on a potential relationship between Korra and Mako crystal clear already, my main gripe against their being each other’s love interests being they were both so stubborn and hard-headed; it’d take an age for it to go anywhere! However, despite the fact they aren’t any less stubborn than when I first made that statement, gone somewhere their relationship has! Already we have confessions of romantic interest on the side of both parties! By episode 5! It seems to have all happened incredibly fast, too fast even- though I hate ‘relationships’ that refuse to progress, there are still 21 episodes left of the series. This kind of development, this early on, just comes off as being rushed. This comparatively light-hearted episode also came off as being quite jarring, having followed on from such a dark, intense episode. I’m not sure I would have placed an episode about a love triangle between the three main characters: a) this early on in the series and b) straight after an episode about how inept Korra is at dealing with the Equalist rebellion. Thank heavens for small mercies that the pair decided to simply remain friends for the time being but, not before breaking poor Bolin’s heart.
Oh Legend of Korra, I’m so, so sorry for accusing you of not being as funny as your predecessor. Whilst perhaps not placed in an appropriate place in the series, and whilst dealing with a gloomy topic, unrequited love, there’s no denying this was easily the funniest episode of Korra to date, what with the prolonged inclusion of the show’s funniest elements: Tenzin’s kids, Korra’s stupidity and Mr Comic Relief himself. Tenzin’s kids’ less-than-helpful advice on how Korra could win Mako over, Korra’s totally uncool “We’re meant for each other” confession and Bolin made this episode! Oh Bolin… Was I the only one wholeheartedly rooting for our underdog here? I guess one could argue Korra and Bolin are far too alike, and that there’s very little chemistry between them for them to be a great couple but, boy, was his heart in the right place! The following scene was both hilarious and heart-breaking at the same time. For shame Korra, for shame…
This episode settled it: Bolin is, by far, my favourite character in Legend of Korra. I guess there’s not much depth to him but, I don’t care- I love a character that makes me laugh! He kind of reminds me of Ouran’s Tamaki Suoh- whist they both have self-inflated egos, they’re actually pretty sensitive, wearing their hearts on their sleeves. With there being no shortage of tortured characters with complex, convoluted backstories, sometimes a rather straightforward character makes a pleasant change!
Aside from the fact that this episode was out of place and premature in terms of the structure of the show it was actually a fairly good one! It may not have been particularly clever or intense but, it was entertaining nevertheless. I’m not sure what I want from next week’s episode- more of the same could end up undermining the overarching rebellion plot-line but, returning to this plotline could feel jarring after such a jolly episode. Hmm, guess I’ll just have to wait and see how Legend of Korra plays it!
Poor Bolin wasn’t expecting that. He’s probably mentally scarred now which just adds to his already dorky character.
It seems like the love story is going to be given a rest for now as it sort of wrapped up at the end of this episode.
I’m a bit sad to hear that they decided to remain just friends. But at least they still have a chance to be together due to that!
Why does that make you sad? They don’t work.
